Use this template to jot down your benchmarks, also for future reference.

Direct Competitors describe companies that produce virtually an identical good or service that is offered within our market. Watch out for their pricing for similar products, and outstanding innovations as inspiration.

Indirect Competitors offer different types of products or services that satisfy the same needs. For example, a pizzeria competes indirectly with a Sushi place shop, but directly with another pizzeria. Also, write down which identical needs are met by these Indirect Competitors.

Note down companies/services/websites whose clients might have the same user problems (like "paradox of choice to decide on something", "lacking trust on touchy questions", "display complex content in an easy way".... ). Look closely at how these companies solved that problem - it can help you.

Offline Alternatives / Workarounds

Ask yourself, what would my users do if my service / my product would not exist. Where do they go and what do they do to solve their problem How would they help themselves even? Watch closely what these solutions provide - they might open an eye or two.
